Grade 8 Biology Practice Test

The primary factor responsible for the color green in most plants is chlorophyll. This pigment is crucial for photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert sunlight into energy. Chlorophyll absorbs light most efficiently in the blue and red wavelengths but reflects green light, which is why plants appear green to our eyes. This reflective property is fundamental to the plant's ability to harness light energy effectively.

Carotenoid pigments, while present in plants and also contributing to their color (often seen as yellow, orange, or red), are not the primary factor for the green coloration. Malic acid is involved in various metabolic processes in plants but does not play a role in the color. Flavonoids are pigments that can provide a range of colors, primarily in flowers and fruits, but again do not account for the green color of leaves and stems. Hence, chlorophyll is indeed the correct answer to explain the green color observed in most plants.
